The goal of the Mako Prize is to help readers find books they love and may not have found on their own. All books in the Mako Prize Jr. tournament are a part of the Sunshine State Young Readers Award Program (SSYRA). The books in the tournament reflect a range of voices, interests, and genres. We want there to be something for everyone while also giving readers the opportunity to discover something new.
Our broader goal is to create a community of and for readers. We’ll have opportunities whenstudents can talk to each other about their books andparticipate in bookish activities. Anyone can judge:students, teachers, staff, administrators, and parents! Judges canparticipate in as many rounds as they would like.
How It Works
We’ve added the 15 books from SSYRA and last year’s statewide winner to a bracket. We now invite our students in grades 3 through 5 to join our judges’ panel. When a reader judges a round, they read both books in a match, then vote for which one they think should advance to the next round. There is no rubric; the reader gets to decide the basis of what it means to win the match.
Hardcover copies of Mako Prize Jr. books are available in the Quadracci Library. The novels are also available in Broward County Public Libraries and through Alvin Sherman’s CloudLibrary.
