The Prize
The Mako Prize is a literary award for the best novel of the year, as determined by the community of students, faculty, staff, and administrators of the NSU University School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The purpose of the competition is to foster reading and discussion across our community. The 2019 prize is our third year.

The Longlist of Books
Using recommendations and data from America's independent booksellers from August through July each year, the committee selects a list of 32 novels that comprise the longlist.

The Structure of the Competition
The competition begins in August/September with the Group Stage. The 32 titles are assigned to eight groups of four (randomly). Two titles advance out of each group. The sixteen titles advancing out of the group stage enter a knockout bracket. The bracket stage takes four rounds to determine The Mako Prize winner.

The Group Stage takes place in August/September. The final four rounds run every few weeks, with the prize winner announcement coming early in January.

The Judges
The judge panels for each group or pairing are made up of NSU University School students, teachers, staff, and administrators.
